Adobe has integrated its AI image generator Firefly into its Substance 3D modeling suite. This allows users to create textures from a simple text prompt, eliminating the need for stock photos. The AI can generate photorealistic or stylized textures that can be applied to 3D models, making the design process more efficient.

The latest release of Substance 3D includes a text-to-texture feature and a generative background feature powered by Firefly. Users can create detailed background images and composite objects into scenes with intelligent perspective and lighting matching. This allows designers to easily enhance their creations with cohesive backgrounds that complement the 3D models.

In demo videos, designers showcase how they used text prompts to generate textures and backgrounds for their designs. One designer used the prompt “full dirt ground with large and small rocks” to create textures for the ground in their scene. Another designer created an abstract background for a 3D model of headphones using a text prompt for an “abstract wave swirl.”

Substance 3D also offers Stager, a tool that can generate 3D environments for showcasing designs. This feature provides a cost-effective alternative to physically photographing products in various environments. Beta versions of Substance 3D Sampler 4.4 and Stager 3.0 with the new Text to Texture and Generative Background features will be available to all Substance 3D customers starting March 18.
