1. Parents fled war in Somalia to start new life in the US, instilling belief in education and hard work
2. Experienced major losses including divorce, job, and home, leading to deep depression and feelings of failure
3. Found healing through therapy, small changes, and support from loved ones, rebuilding life with daughter and starting new projects like a podcast
As a child of Somali refugees, I learned the value of hard work and education from my determined parents. After facing challenges such as my daughter’s premature birth and job loss, I co-founded a healthcare startup. However, in 2022, I experienced major losses including my marriage and job, leading to deep feelings of inadequacy and shame.
Struggling with feelings of helplessness and isolation, I hit rock bottom and considered the possibility of ending my life. Recognizing the need for change, I sought therapy and leaned on loved ones for support. Taking small steps towards healing, like exercise and journaling, slowly began to improve my mental state.
Despite losing everything, I began to see positive changes taking place in my life. While still on a journey to healing, I am rebuilding a new life for myself and my daughter. By sharing my story on LinkedIn, I was able to connect with a supportive community and inspire others facing similar struggles. It’s important to ask for help and remember that, even in the darkest moments, there is hope for a brighter future ahead.
