1. Atlas Renewable Energy signed a 15-year deal with EMOAC for a BESS project in Chile.
2. The company has already contracted 5.2GW of renewable capacity in Latin America.
3. The Chilean storage sector is expanding with new projects, in line with government aims to meet 70% of energy demand from renewables by 2030.
Atlas Renewable Energy has signed a 15-year deal with EMOAC to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Chile, but the company did not specify when it will begin commercial operations. This project is part of the company’s strategy to enhance energy reliability in the region and offer customised energy solutions to clients. The deal follows Atlas’ previous investments in renewable capacity in Latin America and a recent PPA signing with mining company Codelco for “24/7 renewable energy”.
The Chilean storage sector is experiencing growth, with Engie launching a BESS in Antofagasta earlier this month and Ingeteam collaborating with Grenergy on a solar-plus-storage project with a record storage capacity of 4.1GWh. Chile is looking to expand its renewables and storage sectors, aiming to meet 70% of its energy demand from renewables by 2030. Research firm Interact Analytics predicts that Chile will add over 1GW of new storage capacity to the national grid annually between 2024 and 2026 to manage the variability of renewable power investments.
These developments in the Chilean storage sector demonstrate the country’s commitment to transitioning to renewable energy sources and improving energy reliability in the region. The investments by companies like Atlas Renewable Energy and Engie highlight the growing importance of energy storage in supporting a renewable energy transition.
