– Statkraft provides support to UHI for skills report on pumped storage hydro project in the Highlands
– Project, originally named Red John, now Loch na Cathrach, aims to capture excess renewable energy
– Funding will enable UHI to identify workforce requirements, inform education delivery, and address skills gaps through training and partnerships
Statkraft has announced its support for the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) to gain early insight into the education and skills required to build a pumped storage hydro project in the Highlands. The project, now known as Loch na Cathrach, will capture excess renewable energy, storing it for when needed. The 450MW scheme was granted consent in 2021 and will shift Great Britain’s electricity network away from fossil fuels. Statkraft’s funding will help UHI determine the roles needed for the project, benefitting students, businesses, and communities in the region.
The study will also inform education delivery by evaluating the current student population, mapping education provision relevant to the project, and identifying any skills gaps that need to be addressed. The report will provide recommendations for filling these gaps through education, training, and partnerships. Work on the study will begin in spring, with a final report due in summer. Statkraft and UHI are collaborating to ensure that education provision aligns with the needs of key sectors and industry partners in the region. This partnership aims to prepare the local workforce to support the construction of this significant project.
