1. CyTA to proceed with 400,000 smart meter rollout in Cyprus following tender review.
2. Tender for smart meter rollout awarded to CyTA by Electricity Authority for €39.9 million.
3. Delay in implementing contract could lead to loss of EU financing and must be finalized by March 2024.
After a tender review, CyTA in Cyprus has been given the green light to proceed with a 400,000 smart meter rollout across the island. The contract was awarded in February 2024 to CyTA by the Electricity Authority at a cost of €39.9 million. Despite a challenge from Logicom Solutions, which bid lower at €33.6 million, the Tenders Review Authority upheld the decision citing public interest and the risk of losing funding from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility if there are further delays. The contract requires 50,000 smart meters to be received by March 2024 and all 400,000 meters installed by June 2026, with €35 million of funding coming from the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The 400,000 smart meters will replace about two-thirds of the traditional metered base, with some customers, particularly the elderly, opting to keep their traditional meters for cost or practical reasons. Previous delays in the rollout occurred when the bid was awarded to New Cytech in April 2022 but was later challenged by Ningbo. The success of this smart meter rollout is crucial for Cyprus to secure financing from the EU and modernize its energy infrastructure.
