E-REDES in Portugal introduces innovative smart grid street lighting initiative

1. E-REDES is implementing an automation project to vary street lighting intensity and enable remote monitoring with the Luxifer project using the FlexIP system.

2. The Luxifer project, led by two Master’s students in Electrical Engineering, aims to understand the impact of synchronism in fast actions of IP LED luminaire controllers on the electrical network.

3. LED technology in public lighting offers significant energy savings compared to conventional light sources, with LED lamps providing 80-90% energy savings compared to incandescent and 50-60% savings compared to fluorescent lamps.

Portuguese distribution system operator E-REDES is implementing an automation project with the goal of varying the intensity of street lighting and enabling remote monitoring. This project, known as Luxifer, is being developed in partnership with the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Coimbra using the FlexIP system.

Led by two Master’s students in Electrical Engineering, the Luxifer project aims to understand the impact of synchronism in the actions of IP LED luminaire controllers on the electrical network. E-REDES has successfully tested a new remote communications protocol, LoRaWAN, as part of their FlexIP system to create a smart grid and assess the impact on the electricity network.

The Luxifer project controllers were installed and tested in a real environment in Coimbra, allowing for individual control of 20 LED luminaires with point-to-point controllers. The advanced LED technology used in public lighting is not only more sustainable, but also offers significant energy savings compared to traditional light sources according to the International Energy Agency.

LED lighting products have been developed for easy integration into existing fixtures, providing substantial reductions in energy costs compared to incandescent and fluorescent lamps. E-REDES and its partners are dedicated to innovating the energy sector in Portugal, with projects like Luxifer paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable future.
