1. Projects deployed in Bronx and Staten Island
2. Eaton using Tesla Megapack grid-scale BESS products
3. State aiming for 6GW of energy storage online by 2030
Ten energy storage projects are being deployed in the Bronx and Staten Island in New York City. Eaton, a power management company, will provide Tesla Megapack grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) along with power system studies and equipment like switchgear, switchboards, and transformers for the projects. The exact timeline for when these projects will come online has not been specified.
New York State is aiming to increase energy storage deployments to help reduce its dependence on gas peaker plants and decarbonize its energy system, prioritizing areas with predominantly low-income populations. Projects like a gas turbine replacement and clean energy and storage development opportunities have recently been approved by the New York City Industrial Development Agency and New York Power Authority. The state’s goal is to have 6GW of energy storage capacity online by 2030.
Despite the push for energy storage, concerns about safety have arisen due to fires at lithium-ion BESS projects. These incidents have led to a governor-led working group on BESS safety being established in response. The discussions around ensuring the safety and reliability of energy storage technology were held at Solar Media’s Energy Storage Summit 2024 in March.
