The BESS project in Nevada, managed by NV Energy, aims to help the utility manage peak demand periods on the grid using Energy Vault’s BESS hardware and software, including its energy management system Vault-OS. The construction of the project was completed on a ‘compressed schedule’, allowing it to be operational ahead of schedule and before the hot summer months.
NV Energy, the largest public utility in the state, expressed appreciation for Energy Vault’s problem-solving spirit and partnership in bringing the project to life. The project, owned by investment firm Berkshire Hathaway, started construction in Q2 2023 after being revealed as the owner in December 2022.
Energy Vault is known for its gravity-based long-duration energy storage technology EVx, and is close to commissioning its first commercial project in China. The company also entered the BESS and green hydrogen markets due to a slow uptake of LDES technologies. CEO Rob Piconi highlighted the company’s diversification into short-duration and multi-day LDES technologies in response to market trends.
