Engie Chile launches commercial operations for 139MW/638MWh BESS

1. Engie Chile is building its largest BESS project in the country, along with two other BESS projects co-located with solar PV plants.
2. The utility recently started construction on a 48MW/264MWh BESS in Antofagasta, and is adding a 68MW/418MWh BESS to the Tamaya solar project.
3. The Energy Storage Summit Latin America will be held in Santiago, Chile to explore opportunities in countries such as Chile, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico in October 2023.

Engie Chile is currently constructing its largest battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the country with a 48MW power output and 264MWh capacity in Antofagasta. In addition, the company is building two other BESS projects co-located with solar PV plants in Chile. The goal is to optimize renewable energy generation by injecting energy into the system during peak demand periods.

Solar PV projects in Chile are integrating energy storage to address curtailment issues, while standalone energy storage projects are taking advantage of new opportunities in the capacity market and energy trading. The Chilean government is also supporting domestic lithium production and setting aside land for downstream energy storage projects.

The Energy Storage Summit Latin America will be held in Santiago for the third time, focusing on opportunities in countries like Chile, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. The event will bring together investors, policy makers, developers, utilities, technology providers, and other key stakeholders to discuss the evolving storage landscape in Latin America. The summit aims to explore the growing potential for energy storage projects in the region.
