1. Lightshift Energy is implementing at least 10 BESS projects in Massachusetts to help manage generation and load, decarbonize grids, and save costs.
2. Four projects are under construction in Groton, Holden, and Paxton for operation this summer, with more projects in late-stage and mid-stage development for 2024 and 2025.
3. The BESS projects will provide peak shaving activities, balance supply and demand, and help reduce emissions across the state, with a total saving of over US$200 million expected by 2050.
Lightshift is implementing the state’s first jointly operated fleet of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, with at least 10 projects planned. These assets will help utilities manage generation and load, decarbonize grids, and save costs, with over US$200 million in savings expected by 2050. Four projects are under construction in Groton, Holden, and Paxton, with more in late-stage and mid-stage development in other towns, all expected to come online by 2025.
The BESS projects will provide peak shaving activities, balancing supply and demand while reducing emissions across Massachusetts. Lightshift Energy, previously known as Delorean Power, recently raised US$100 million from Greenbacker for its pipeline, which is mainly focused on the Northeastern and Southeastern US. The Holden and Groton projects may be part of the same ones previously announced by the company in those towns, with systems of approximately 4.5-hour durations.
In addition to smaller-scale projects, Massachusetts is also developing large-scale BESS projects. In June last year, two projects totalling 800MWh were granted Zoning Law exemptions to progress in the state. This initiative aims to significantly contribute to decarbonizing the state’s grid and reducing costs for utilities in the long term.
