This report projects that advanced geothermal technology could increase US geothermal energy production to 90 GW by 2050, supporting the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of a carbon-free electricity grid by 2035 and creating jobs in the clean energy sector.

US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm emphasized the importance of continued innovation in clean energy technologies, including geothermal power. Next-generation geothermal technology represents a significant advancement in tapping into the Earth’s heat for power generation, offering more efficient and sustainable methods. This approach benefits from existing technology, supply chains, and workforces from the oil and gas sector.

Key findings from the report highlight the potential for significant expansion of next-generation geothermal power, with the ability to provide 90 GW of clean and reliable power by 2050.
