Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Massachusetts, has recently completed a 725-kW solar project that is expected to provide 95% of the zoo’s power. Managed by Zoo New England, the solar system was installed by Solect Energy with support from SolarKal and consists of a 1,500-panel array built in the existing zoo parking lot. The goal of the project is to demonstrate the use of solar technology to the hundreds of thousands of visitors that come to the zoo annually, in hopes of inspiring others to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Yaniv Kalish, CEO of SolarKal, expressed excitement about the project’s potential impact on reducing the zoo’s carbon footprint, while also saving money. John Linehan, President and CEO of Zoo New England, emphasized the importance of conservation in the zoo’s mission and how the project aligns with efforts to preserve wildlife and habitats.
The Stone Zoo solar array project was made possible with the help of State Senator Jason Lewis and State Representative Michael Day, who secured $3 million for the project. This clean energy initiative is seen as a step towards creating a more sustainable future and combating the negative impacts of climate change through the use of renewable energy sources.
