– UK Power Networks launches Powercast software for EV charger status
– Powercast provides information on functioning chargers and power outages
– Powercast aims to increase confidence in EV charging and help drivers make informed decisions on charging locations
UK Power Networks has introduced Powercast, an open data-based software that provides information on the status of electric vehicle (EV) chargers. The open source API utilizes the company’s data to inform users about whether chargers are working or out due to a power outage. This allows drivers to make informed decisions about managing their charging and finding alternative locations in case of a power outage. The aim is to support the transition to low carbon technology and increase confidence in EV adoption.
Through a trial with EV charging platform provider ev.energy, Powercast has shown promising results. The software notifies users of planned or unplanned power outages, changes to electricity works, and estimated restoration times, allowing them to plan their charging accordingly. This feature has been well-received by customers, with 94% wanting to continue receiving power cut notifications even after the trial ended. The collaboration between UK Power Networks and ev.energy aims to simplify charging for existing customers and encourage more people to switch to EVs confidently.
With concerns about charging infrastructure, such as plug types and payment options, Powercast addresses one of the challenges by providing real-time information about charger availability. This will help increase confidence among EV drivers, most of whom do not have access to other vehicles, in being able to charge where and when they need to. Overall, the goal is to support the widespread adoption of EVs and make the transition to low carbon technology more accessible and reliable for all users connected to UK Power Networks.
