1. Plugin EVs took a 56.9% share in Sweden in April, with BEVs at 30.9% and PHEVs at 26.0%.
2. BEVs are underperforming due to absent incentives, weak consumer economy, and overpriced models, particularly from Stellantis.
3. The Volvo EX30 was the best-selling BEV in March, with 698 units sold, followed by the Tesla Model Y and Volvo XC40.
In April, plugin electric vehicles (EVs) in Sweden had a 56.9% market share, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) at 30.9% and plugin hybrids (PHEVs) at 26.0%. While BEVs experienced a slight decrease in volume compared to the previous year, PHEVs saw a significant increase, contributing to the overall growth of the EV market.
BEVs have been underperforming due to the absence of incentives, weak consumer economy, and high prices compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Stellantis models, such as the Peugeot e-208, are examples of overpriced BEVs, which has led to a decline in BEV sales in Sweden.
Despite challenges in the BEV market, Geely, which includes Volvo and Polestar, has seen an increase in BEV sales. The new Volvo EX30 became the best-selling BEV in March. Diesel-only vehicles’ market share decreased in April 2024, indicating a shift towards cleaner vehicles in Sweden.
Notable debuts in April included the Polestar 4 and Mini Countryman BEV. Stellantis, Renault, and Nissan have experienced significant drops in BEV sales, while Tesla has maintained stable volumes. Implementing a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate may be necessary to ensure the growth of BEV sales among major manufacturers in Sweden.
