– NYPA expanding drone capabilities for asset monitoring and inspection of electric infrastructure
– FAA granted NYPA a waiver to fly drones beyond visual line of sight in Class G airspace
– Skydio provided equipment and advisory services to help NYPA obtain the waiver and operate drones autonomously
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is expanding its drone capabilities to monitor and inspect its electric infrastructure throughout the state after receiving a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly drones beyond visual line of sight. The waiver allows NYPA to use drones to monitor and inspect transmission, generation, and canal assets.
NYPA worked with Skydio, a U.S. drone and software manufacturer, to obtain the FAA waiver, allowing operations through 2028 specifically for Skydio drones. Using autonomous drone technology can transform operational workflows and provide valuable data for asset management and emergency response decisions.
NYPA President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll highlighted the significant investment in the robotics program, recognizing drones as safe and efficient tools for inspecting critical assets and delivering clean power. The expanded drone operations will primarily focus on inspecting transmission assets and canal waterways to enhance infrastructure reliability and performance.
The use of drones by NYPA has increased efficiency in asset inspection, reducing time and improving accuracy, particularly after inclement weather events. With over 100 trained drone pilots and ongoing investments in the program, NYPA is at the forefront of utilizing drone technology in the energy industry.
By collaborating with vendors in AI and analytics, NYPA aims to streamline the analysis of drone-captured images to identify potential issues before they lead to power failure. The use of AI technology has significantly improved the drone inspection program, allowing for quicker and more thorough evaluations of transmission lines.
