The Scottish government has granted development consent to the Chleansaid wind farm, a proposed 16-turbine wind farm near Lairg. The project, developed by ESB, will create 96 MW of renewable energy capacity, enough to power approximately 54,000 homes. Located on the Dalnessie Estate, the wind farm will include turbines with a maximum blade tip height of 200 m, a 20 MW battery energy storage scheme, and supporting infrastructure. The environmental impact assessment process was coordinated by RSK, with various group companies providing additional support like traffic considerations, public exhibitions, and planning assistance.
The wind farm is anticipated to save up to 132,451 t of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year and will generate enough electricity to power 54,396 households in Scotland. The development process involved consultation with regulatory bodies like the Scottish Environment Protection Agency to minimize impacts on peatland and improve habitats. ESB Project Director, Duncan Scott, highlighted the economic benefits, estimating spending of £17.6 million in the Highlands and creating local jobs during construction and operation phases.
Construction of the wind farm is set to begin in 2026, with operations scheduled to start in 2027. The project is expected to contribute significantly to energy decarbonization in Scotland and the UK, while also supporting the local economy and job creation.
