Danish renewable energy company Ørsted has officially completed the inauguration of the 900MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms in Taiwan. This project has doubled Taiwan’s offshore wind power generation capabilities. The inauguration event was attended by Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen and Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua, along with officials from CDPQ and Cathay PE, local suppliers, and financial institutions. President Tsai Ing-wen highlighted the achievement as the largest offshore wind farm in the Asia-Pacific region and Taiwan’s progress in transitioning to renewable energy sources.
The journey to completing these wind farms began in November 2019 with the construction of the onshore substation. Ørsted divested a 50% stake in the Greater Changhua 1 wind farm in December 2020 to a consortium comprising CDPQ and Cathay PE. Full-scale offshore construction commenced in March 2021, with the wind farms generating power by April 2022. The Greater Changhua 2a wind farm remains entirely under Ørsted’s ownership and utilizes Siemens Gamesa turbines.
Ørsted’s group president and CEO, Mads Nipper, emphasized the significance of the Greater Changhua wind farms as the company’s first gigawatt-scale offshore wind farms outside of Europe and Taiwan’s first utility-scale far-shore wind farms. The company is committed to expanding its offshore wind projects globally and promoting the transition to green energy.
