Powin Enters the 5MWh BESS Container Club with Innovative New ‘Pod’ Unit

– Powin Pod fits 5MWh maximum energy capacity with 2.5MW DC power rated output into a 20-foot container enclosure
– Designed to work with Powin’s Centipede modular battery energy storage system, allowing for multiple BESS units to be added side-by-side for larger capacities
– Equipped with LFP cells from Powin’s suppliers, including 320Ah cells from Rept Battero, and US-made units to be available from 2026, with deliveries starting in mid-2025.

Powin has released a new Pod that can hold a maximum energy capacity of 5MWh with a 2.5MW DC power output, fitting into a 20-foot container. This puts Powin in line with similar products from competitors in the market, including Chinese manufacturers with containers holding over 6MWh. The Pod is designed for use with Powin’s Centipede platform, allowing for multiple BESS units to be combined for larger capacities.

The new Pod is equipped with LFP cells from various suppliers, with an expected cycle life of 7,300 cycles at a 2-hour duration. It includes liquid-cooled thermal management and can operate in temperatures ranging from -30°C to 60°C. The product has undergone rigorous testing and meets various industry standards.

Deliveries of the Pod are set to begin in mid-2025, with plans to transition to US manufacturing in 2026. Powin aims for the Pod to be eligible for domestic content tax credits. The company’s executive VP, Danny Lu, believes that the high energy density of the product will make Powin competitive with Chinese rivals in markets where land is limited. Powin’s strategy of sourcing cells from multiple providers aims to mitigate supply issues that have affected the industry in the past.
