Voltalia, a renowned player in renewable energies, has recently been awarded a 130 MW solar project near Gafsa in south-west Tunisia. This project, which signifies a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to the region, is expected to generate power equivalent to the consumption of over 700,000 individuals. The project’s revenues will be secured through a 30-year power sales contract with STEG, the operator of the Tunisian public grid. Tunisia aims to increase its renewable energy electricity production rate to 30% by 2030, a substantial jump from the mere 2.2% recorded in 2023.
Given Tunisia’s ample sunshine, solar power emerges as a competitive alternative to thermal power plants that heavily rely on imported natural gas. Moreover, the country faces climate change vulnerabilities due to its agriculture’s climate-dependency and susceptibility to flooding owing to high urbanization levels. Construction of the solar project is projected to commence in 2025, with commissioning anticipated in 2026. Voltalia’s CEO, Sébastien Clerc, expressed delight in securing the project, citing favorable climate conditions, supportive government policies, and backing from international financial institutions as critical factors underpinning Tunisia’s significant renewable energy potential. The project’s success underscores the country’s viability in promoting sustainable energy solutions, contributing towards global environmental objectives.
