CEP Renewables’ Solar Project Cleans Up Highly Polluted Land

CEP Renewables has begun construction on the 19 MWDC Foul Rift solar project in White Township, New Jersey, on a brownfield site that was previously a composting facility with a history of environmental violations from the NJDEP. The project will remediate the site, provide clean energy, pollinator habitats, and increased tax revenue for the local community. It is expected to be operational by September 2024.

Chris Ichter, executive VP at CEP Renewables, highlighted the project as an example of using renewable energy subsidies to reduce carbon footprints and remediate environmental damage. CEP’s experience with similar landfill and brownfield projects has enabled a successful partnership with White Township to positively impact future generations.

An environmental investigation revealed soil contamination with metals and 92 environmental violations, which CEP resolved to bring the site into compliance with NJDEP regulations. In exchange for interconnection easement rights, CEP agreed to build a porous pavement walking path in the township’s recreational fields, a project previously stalled due to lack of funding.

The Foul Rift project not only transforms a hazardous site into a revenue-generating asset but also contributes to New Jersey maintaining its top ranking as the leading state in the U.S. for installed solar capacity per square mile.
