KMFA Classical 89.5, a radio station in Austin, Texas, has invested in a rooftop solar project and is in the process of installing 166 solar panels, the maximum allowed by city code, on their building. The solar array is expected to offset 133,000 kWh of electrical consumption annually and reduce KMFA’s average monthly power cost by 40 to 50% by supplying power to Austin Energy’s grid and receiving credits in return.
In addition to the solar panels, KMFA will soon have four electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in their parking lot, equipped with universal chargers for employees and guests to use. CEO George Preston states that the goal is to reduce power costs, rely on renewable energy sources, and contribute to solving power shortages during high-demand periods.
The solar project is expected to be completed by the end of May, just in time for the summer when power consumption is high. The EV charging stations are scheduled to be operational by the end of June. By investing in solar power and EV infrastructure, KMFA aims to align its practices with its values of sustainability and eco-friendliness while also maintaining a fiscally strong workplace.
