– Dominion Energy installed the first monopile foundation for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project using the Orion vessel
– The project will consist of 176 turbines generating renewable energy for up to 660,000 homes
– Precautions are being taken to protect the environment and marine species during installation, including measures to protect the North Atlantic right whale
Dominion Energy has successfully installed the first monopile foundation for the 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, with the support of Orion, DEME Group’s heavy lift vessel. Once completed in late 2026, CVOW will include 176 turbines capable of powering up to 660,000 homes and generating fuel savings of $3 billion for customers within the first 10 years of operation. Dominion Energy’s CEO emphasized the project’s commitment to delivering reliable, affordable, and clean energy while ensuring environmental protection measures are in place.
The monopile foundations installed off the Virginia coast weigh over 1000 tons each and are designed by global leader EEW SPC. The project aims to continue installing monopiles till 2024 and resume in 2025 while considering the protection of North Atlantic right whales during their migration period. Additional measures such as bubble curtains and Protected Species Observers on vessels will be implemented to safeguard marine life during construction. Dominion Energy’s collaboration with consortium partner Prysmian will contribute to delivering Virginia-made energy sustainably.
