DARPA recently announced the first-ever in-air test of an AI-piloted fighter jet in combat simulation against a human-piloted F-16 that took place in September 2023 at Edwards Air Force Base. The AI pilot flew a specially modified F-16 test aircraft known as the X-62A, or VISTA, in a dogfight scenario reminiscent of scenes from Top Gun, reaching speeds of 1,200 miles per hour with the F-16 flying within 2,000 feet.

While officials did not disclose the outcome of the simulation, DARPA’s primary goal is to promote human-machine teaming and trusted autonomy. The ACE program aims to demonstrate that a single human pilot can command and team up with autonomous AI aircraft effectively in combat scenarios, with the AI-piloted aircraft being able to engage in maneuvers beyond human capabilities.

DARPA emphasizes the importance of being proactive in developing advanced defense technologies to ensure the United States remains ahead of potential adversaries like China, who are also likely working on similar AI defense projects. Lt. Col. Ryan Hefron, program manager of ACE, stresses the significance of establishing trust in AI algorithms in real-world settings to enhance the capabilities of human pilots in combat.
