Wendy and Kurt Meyer moved from California to Iowa in 2021 after Wendy’s daughter decided to relocate there for a better lifestyle. Initially hesitant, the couple embraced the change and enjoyed the open space and closer proximity to family. They bought a home in a small town called Washington and attempted to retire, but found it boring and eventually took up jobs. However, they missed the activities and amenities they had in California, leading them to feel that Iowa wasn’t the right fit. They were surprised by the extreme weather fluctuations and found that certain things were not as affordable as expected.

Despite giving Iowa a chance for 20 months, the Meyers ultimately decided to move back to California. They quickly settled back into their old life in Mission Viejo, where they found comfort and familiarity. Wendy resumed a part-time job, and they both reconnected with their old routines and activities. They missed their children but stayed connected through visits and virtual communication. The couple realized that they were not ready to retire and wanted to remain active. Through this experience, they gained a newfound appreciation for California and planned to stay there indefinitely, seeing it as their true home.
