Austrian pipe solution provider Pipelife has introduced a new modular sensor-based solution called SmartProbe for detecting water leakage from cracked water pipes. Developed with water suppliers in the Netherlands, the SmartProbe can be easily installed in hard-to-reach areas of the water network and can be equipped with sensors chosen by the customer.
Leak detection is crucial for water utilities due to significant non-revenue water, with leak detection technologies like acoustic detection and pressure monitoring becoming increasingly important. Pipelife’s SmartProbe is designed for use in areas of the network that would otherwise remain unmonitored, providing utilities with a complete picture of their network to make better operation and maintenance decisions.
The fully modular and battery-powered SmartProbe can be installed quickly on various types of pipes without interrupting the water supply. It can be integrated into existing data management systems and combined with Pipelife’s SmartHub platform for data analysis. Over 70 SmartProbe units have already been installed in the Netherlands and Sweden, with more installations planned in Austria and Serbia.
With the implementation of Europe’s revised drinking water directive, water utilities are required to provide information on their performance efficiency and leakage rates, with water leakage levels needing to be assessed and reduced if they exceed set thresholds.
