Ameresco and Atlantic Green Partner for UK Battery Energy Storage Solution (BESS) Contract

– Ameresco and Envision Energy chosen by Atlantic Green to build a 300 MW battery energy storage project
– Construction to start this year with grid connection expected by end of 2026
– Project aims to support UK’s net zero goals and reduce reliance on fossil-fuelled generation

Ameresco, Inc. and Envision Energy have been selected by Atlantic Green to construct the Cellarhead project, a 300 MW battery energy storage project in the UK with a maximum capacity of 624 MWh. This project aims to enhance the UK’s energy security and reliability. Construction is expected to begin this year, with grid connection slated for the end of 2026.

Atlantic Green, established in 2021, is a joint venture focusing on grid-scale battery energy storage systems in the UK. The Cellarhead project is a significant milestone for Atlantic Green, contributing to their mission of developing 2 GW of battery storage capacity to support the UK’s clean energy transition. Ameresco has entered into an EPC and O&M contract for the project, with Envision Energy providing equipment and services.

The completion of the Cellarhead BESS is crucial for the UK’s journey to achieving net-zero emissions. Atlantic Green aims to leverage battery storage assets to meet the rising demand in the UK electricity system. Ameresco and Atlantic Green anticipate finishing the project by mid-2026 and believe that energy storage technology is essential for the UK to reach its net-zero targets. Envision Energy highlights the importance of advanced battery solutions in enhancing energy security and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
