By the end of 2023, 34.8 million smart electricity and gas meters had been installed in British homes and small businesses, making up 61% of all meters. Of these, approximately 20.2 million were smart electricity meters and 14.5 million were smart gas meters. Around 30.8 million of these meters were operating in smart mode, with the rest operating in traditional mode. Despite a slight decrease in installations in 2023 compared to the previous year, the number of smart meters installed by large suppliers increased in the second half of the year.
Smart meters accounted for approximately 61% of domestic meters and 57% of smaller non-domestic meters by the end of 2023. Prepayment coverage remained steady at almost 13%. In total, there are around 29.5 million electricity meters and 24.2 million gas meters at domestic properties, along with 2.5 million electricity meters and 0.8 million gas meters at smaller non-domestic sites.
Further data from Electralink showed an additional 424,000 smart meter installations in January and February 2024, continuing the trend of increased installations compared to the previous year. As of now, 30.2 million smart meters are connected to the DCC network. While large suppliers operate the majority of domestic meters, small suppliers have a larger share in the smaller non-domestic market.
