Calpine plans to commission 75% of 680MW California Battery Energy Storage System during summer months

1. Calpine announced the Nova project in January this year with a US$1 billion-plus financing round.
2. The 43-acre project is on the former site of Calpine’s Inland Empire legacy power plant, decommissioned in late 2022.
3. The project can power 680,000 homes for four hours, will be used by utilities Southern California Edison, Peninsula Clean Energy, and San Diego Gas & Electric through Resource Adequacy.

Calpine announced the Nova project, a 43-acre energy storage project on the site of its former Inland Empire power plant. While the capacity was not disclosed, it is expected to power 680,000 homes for four hours, totaling 2,720MWh. The project will supply electricity to Southern California Edison, Peninsula Clean Energy, and San Diego Gas & Electric, likely through Resource Adequacy. SCE will specifically contract for 110MW of the project.

Calpine Corporation, a company that operates natural gas and geothermal resources in the US, has 78 plants and is expanding its portfolio of battery energy storage systems (BESS). In addition to Nova, it has the Santa Ana BESS already in operation, the West Ford Flat BESS and Bear Canyon BESS under construction, and claims to have a total of 2,000MW of BESS in development. The Nova project is part of a $1 billion-plus financing round and is expected to be operational in the fall, further contributing to California’s growing energy storage infrastructure.
