1. Chile awarded 32 licenses for renewable projects adding 6.5GW of capacity during President Gabriel Boric’s administration.
2. The bidding for energy storage projects in Chile opened on 13 May and applications are open until 23 May.
3. Developers can apply for land allocation for storage projects in partnership with CEN, with a deadline for projects to be operational by June 2027.
President Gabriel Boric’s administration in Chile has recently awarded 32 licenses to renewable projects, expected to add 6.5GW of capacity. The minister of National Assets, Marcela Sandoval, expressed hope for similar success in promoting energy storage. A bidding process opened in May for projects to be operational by 2027, with land licenses lasting up to 40 years. Developers can apply for land allocation in cooperation with CEN, an organization coordinating Chile’s electricity system.
In Chile, standalone energy storage projects are becoming more prominent, with developers and power producers increasing capacity as coal plants are decommissioned. Engie recently announced plans for a battery energy storage system at a former coal plant site. Energy storage is also being incorporated into existing solar PV projects to address solar curtailment and negative pricing issues.
Those interested in participating in Chile’s energy storage initiatives can find more information on the Ministry of Energy’s website. Solar Media, the publisher of Energy-Storage.news, will host the 3rd Energy Storage Summit Latin America in Santiago in October 2024, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the energy storage landscape in the region.
