EDP and Rondo Energy introduce new industrial heat solution

1. Rondo ‘Heat Batteries’ convert intermittent electric power from renewable sources into continuous high-temperature heat.
2. Rondo Energy plans to increase the annual production of its ‘Heat Batteries’ to 90GWh by June 2023.
3. EDP and Rondo Energy have partnered to develop wind and solar parks in order to offer commercial and industrial customers renewable heat and power supply contracts for deep decarbonization and energy savings.

Rondo Energy’s ‘Heat Batteries’ technology converts intermittent renewable electric power into continuous high-temperature heat, with the ability to provide power through a combined heat and power configuration. In June 2023, the company announced plans to scale annual production of these batteries to 90GWh. The partnership with EDP involves the development of large-scale wind and solar parks, some of which will be co-located with a ‘Heat Battery’.

The projects led by EDP are expected to create a new market for commercial and industrial customers, offering renewable heat and power supply contracts that promise deep decarbonization and significant energy savings. EDP’s board member, Vera Pinto Pereira, sees Rondo Energy’s technology as a significant business opportunity for decarbonizing energy-intensive clients. Rondo Energy’s CEO, John O’Donnell, believes the partnership with EDP will revolutionize the industry by providing low-cost clean heat to industrial customers without requiring any changes to their facilities.

Following a successful fundraising round of US $60 million in August 2023, Rondo Energy secured investments from companies such as Rio Tinto and Microsoft. This partnership marks a collaborative effort to provide competitive, 24-hour clean heat to industrial customers at prices comparable to natural gas.
