Elements Green receives preliminary approval for 400MW battery project in Germany

1. Elements Green announced a preliminary planning approval for a 400MW BESS project in Vorwerkshof.
2. The project would require 18 hectares of land and could potentially include future BESS capacity additions.
3. Germany is targeting significant renewable energy capacity by 2030, which will require large-scale energy storage like the one proposed.

Elements Green has announced a preliminary planning approval for a 400MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Vorwerkshof, Germany. The project will require 18 hectares to house 100 20-foot BESS container units and balance of plant equipment. Future capacity additions are possible, with 100MW only requiring 1 hectare. Germany is showing interest in green hydrogen storage, with underground caverns at a nearby site being considered for the purpose.

The project is one of the largest BESS projects in Germany to-date, with no targeted commercial operation date announced yet. Germany is aiming for 145GW of onshore and offshore wind and 215GW of solar PV capacity by 2030, which will require large-scale energy storage solutions. The Federal government has released an Electricity Storage Strategy to achieve these targets. Elements Green is also active in the UK with large-scale solar projects. Other developers in Germany, such as Eco Stor, are also working on similar sized BESS projects.
