Elicio and BayWa r.e. have won the AO5 tender in France to develop a floating offshore wind farm in the south of Brittany off the coast of Lorient. This project, named ‘Pennavel’, is expected to generate about 30% of Brittany’s renewable energy production and power over 450,000 inhabitants annually. It will be the first commercial floating wind farm in the world to be awarded a long-term Contract for Difference (CfD) and will have a secured grid connection with RTE, the French transmission system operator. The consortium is committed to local engagement and sustainable development, with plans to invest €5 million in supporting socio-economical activities in Brittany and Pays de la Loire regions.

The project will generate around 4.5 million working hours during the construction phase and create more than 30 permanent jobs during operation. Elicio and BayWa r.e. see this project as instrumental in driving the floating wind industry in France, aligning with the French government’s goal to commission around 50 offshore wind farms by 2050. Both companies are confident in their abilities to execute the project successfully and contribute to the growth of offshore wind energy in France. The project represents a significant milestone for the consortium and sets a benchmark for future floating wind farms globally.
