1. TotalEnergies is completing a 25MW/75MWh Li-ion project in Belgium with 40 containerised BESS solutions from Saft, with plans for a second project of equal size.
2. The company aims to develop 5GW of its own battery storage projects globally by 2030, with previous projects in France and recent acquisitions in Germany and the US.
3. Belgium is seeing growth in battery storage assets, with projects like a VRFB system in Aalst and significant capacity market contracts awarded by the grid operator Elia.
TotalEnergies is set to complete a 25MW/75MWh lithium-ion battery project in Europe by the end of the year, with Saft providing 40 containerised BESS solutions. The energy company also announced another project of equal size and capacity in Fuloy, Wallonia, Belgium, with an investment of about €70 million. TotalEnergies aims to develop 5GW of battery storage projects globally by 2030 and has already delivered four projects in France. In Belgium, the company has various energy assets, including a CCGT plant, a PHES plant, and an offshore wind farm, with plans for more wind and solar PV projects.
Belgium is seeing an increase in battery storage assets due to its congested grid with a rising share of renewable energy. Minister Van Straeten recently attended the inauguration of a 0.8MWh VRFB system in Aalst, co-located with a 0.6MW solar PV array. The project, provided by Invinity Energy Systems and ENGIE, will store energy for use in the evenings. Belgium’s largest battery storage systems currently include a 50MW/100MWh system in Wallonia and a 25MW/100MWh system in Ruien. The country’s grid operator, Elia, awarded contracts to 357MW of new-build BESS projects last year, providing revenue certainty for these assets.
