– Horizon Europe focuses on green and digital transitions and EU resilience
– Strategic plan for 2025-2027 aims for fair transition to climate neutrality
– Specific areas of research include sustainable energy and transport, renewable energy supply, efficient energy usage in buildings and industry, and sustainable transport modes
The focus of the Horizon Europe climate, energy, and mobility ‘cluster’ for the next three years is on the green and digital transitions and improving EU resilience through a fair transition to climate neutrality by 2050. This entails the transition to low, zero, and negative emissions technologies in the energy and mobility sectors while boosting competitiveness and reducing environmental footprints. The cluster will also focus on contributing to the European Green Deal and Commission’s priorities for digital and innovation-based economy.
The 2025-2027 strategic plan for Horizon Europe-supported research and innovation in the energy sector identifies four specific areas: clean transition of energy and transport sectors, efficient renewable and decarbonized energy supply, energy use in buildings and industry, and sustainable transport modes. Research and innovation activities will focus on developing battery technologies, renewable energy generation, energy network modernization, and carbon capture technologies.
Efforts will also focus on energy-efficient building and industry practices, including renewable energy integration and electrification. Additionally, research and innovation activities will target sustainable and competitive transport modes, with an emphasis on electrification and developing the European battery value chain. Overall, the goal is to accelerate the transition to zero-emission road transport and integrate vehicles into a resilient mobility system and renewable energy grid.
