Europe’s largest BESS demonstrates competitiveness with Asia

– Prime Batteries’ BESS unit will charge and discharge based on production levels and was produced locally
– EIT InnoEnergy CEO praised Prime for winning a major contract with locally developed solutions
– Prime Batteries CEO announced plans to increase the project to 216MWh by 2025, making it one of the largest in Europe

Prime Batteries, a company providing BESS units, announced that their batteries will charge during peak production times and discharge when production decreases. The CEO of EIT InnoEnergy in Central and Eastern Europe praised Prime for winning a major contract with locally developed solutions, showing that European producers can compete with global competitors. The company plans to increase the project to 216MWh by 2025, making it one of the largest hybrid plants in Europe.

The inauguration ceremony of the project was attended by the Swedish ambassador to Romania and representatives from the EIT. Similar projects are being developed in Sweden by Monsson Group in partnership with Northvolt, a Swedish lithium-ion battery manufacturer. The BESS in Romania, built with equipment from the EU, is currently the largest in Europe.

Local contractor Emergy’s project manager, George-Madalin Chitaru, highlighted the significance of the project as the largest BESS in Europe with EU-produced equipment. Romania is also seeking large-scale BESS projects, recently reopening solicitation for 240MW/480MWh projects. This news shows the growing interest and investment in energy storage solutions in Europe.
