GEI and YEO collaborate on solar-plus-storage project in Zambia

1. GEI and YEO have established Cooma Solar Power Plant Limited to build and operate a project in Choma, Zambia.
2. The BESS project by YEO has a 20MWh energy storage capacity, with an offtaker being a Zambia state utility and mining firm.
3. Preliminary activities, including feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments, have been completed for the project in Choma, with the involvement of both GEI Power and YEO in the renewable energy sector in Zambia.

GEI and YEO have formed Cooma Solar Power Plant Limited in Zambia’s Choma district, with a 20MWh energy storage capacity. Preliminary activities like feasibility studies have been completed. YEO, a Turkey-based energy solutions company, is involved with a 688kWh BESS product and EPC services. The Ministry of Energy sees potential for a manufacturing plant in Zambia through this partnership.

GEI Power is working on several projects in Zambia, including the Kazungula Solar Power Plant (KSPP) and solar-plus-green-hydrogen projects in different districts. The Sesheke district might also see a 400MWh BESS project by local developer GreenCo. Masdar, an IPP from the UAE, has signed an MOU with Zesco to develop 2GW of solar PV in Zambia.

Zambia is represented by Zesco in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), a collaboration of southern African countries sharing a power grid. Collaboration with Turkish expertise and partnerships with international firms like YEO and Masdar are expected to boost Zambia’s renewable energy sector. The country aims to tap into innovation in battery storage and expand its manufacturing capabilities in the energy sector.
