Glen Earrach Energy (GEE) has revealed plans for a pumped storage hydro project in Scotland with the capacity to power one million homes. The project, located on the Balmacaan estate, involves a 2GW power generation capacity and 30 gigawatt hours of storage, requiring a £2bn investment and creating hundreds of jobs over six years. The project aims to use the unique topography of Loch Ness to optimize power generation and minimize impact on water levels.

GEE has engaged with local communities, businesses, and government officials for feedback on the project’s integration. The company, along with a consortium of advisors, has submitted a scoping request to the Scottish government’s energy consents unit. The project is the largest of its kind on Loch Ness, benefiting from proximity to the central grid and existing wind farms for enhanced efficiency.

According to GEE director Roderick MacLeod, pumped storage hydro is essential in balancing energy supply when wind power is insufficient. The project is identified as the most efficient in the UK by international experts. A community engagement event is scheduled for stakeholders to discuss the project further and maximize its positive impact on the area.
