1. Globeleq’s Red Sands project in SA awarded Preferred Bidder status in Energy Storage Capacity Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme
2. Battery storage essential for renewable energy generation to tackle energy crises and climate change
3. UK company Globeleq investing US$300 million in Red Sands project to support South Africa’s transition to clean energy grid
UK company Globeleq, backed by the UK Government, announced that its Red Sands project in South Africa has been awarded Preferred Bidder status in the Energy Storage Capacity Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. This project aims to address climate change by enabling renewable energy generation through battery storage technology.
The Red Sands project, located in the Northern Cape, will involve a significant investment of US$300 million and is expected to take 24 months to construct. This initiative is part of the UK’s commitment to the Just Energy Transition Partnership agreed at COP26, which aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and transition to clean energy.
Globeleq, the largest independent power producer in Africa, is leading the way in providing renewable energy solutions across the continent. By developing Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) projects, like Red Sands, Globeleq is contributing to the expansion of renewable energy and the transition to a carbon-free power grid.
The UK High Commissioner to South Africa highlighted the importance of this investment in tackling the energy crisis and reducing carbon emissions. The Red Sands project represents a significant step towards achieving energy security and stability in South Africa while supporting the country’s goals of transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
