2. New research shows a link between car exhaust and Alzheimer’s
3. Burning fossil fuels is linked to Alzheimer’s, with magnetite particles from pollution causing neurodegeneration
New research has linked car exhaust to Alzheimer’s disease, sparking a new argument in favor of electric vehicles and the removal of fossil fuels. The study found that magnetite particles, found in air pollution from high-temperature combustion like vehicle exhaust and coal-fired power stations, can induce symptoms of Alzheimer’s. These particles can enter the brain and lead to inflammation and cell degeneration, independent of the individual’s disease state. Research has shown a direct association between air pollution and the formation of senile plaques, the clumps of abnormal protein found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
The study raises concerns about the health risks associated with air pollution from car exhaust, prompting a reevaluation of activities like jogging and biking near highways or leaving engines running in school pickup zones. The findings provide further evidence of the harmful effects of burning fossil fuels on human health and the environment. The research highlights the urgent need to transition to cleaner alternatives like electric vehicles to mitigate the impact of air pollution on public health.
