– The project aims to apply AI to enhance data value extraction and improve distribution network service
– Collaboration with BCAM focuses on demand forecasting in the LV network and is part of the larger IA4TES project aimed at investigating AI solutions in the electricity sector
Iberdrola is leading the AI Innovation Data Space (i-DS) project to enhance the extraction of value from data to optimize power grids. The aim is to apply AI to improve the service of distribution networks by accelerating and enhancing value extraction from data. The project is being conducted within Iberdrola’s Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub, with collaboration from the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) focusing on demand forecasting in the LV network.
The BCAM has previously participated in projects within the Innovation Hub, such as the IA4TES project investigating AI solutions for the electricity sector. With funding exceeding €12.5 million, the three-year project aims to establish a center of excellence for AI in the energy sector. The Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub in Bilbao, launched by Iberdrola España in collaboration with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, fosters research and innovation in smart grids to address energy transition challenges. So far, over 120 projects worth €130 million have been identified, with ongoing R&D&I projects totaling an estimated investment of €42 million in Iberdrola Redes España. Additionally, partnerships have been established with more than 100 technology partners for grid digitalization, renewable integration, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. The Hub’s head, Noemí Alonso, emphasizes Iberdrola España’s commitment to advancing the energy transition through innovative collaboration.
