2. The initiative is a partnership between Nicosia Municipality, Nicosia Water Board, and Smart Nicosia.
3. The project aims to reduce water losses and improve water resource management in the city.

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is rolling out a smart water meter initiative as part of its Smart Nicosia smart city program. Partnering with the Nicosia Water Board, the city plans to install 150,000 smart water meters city-wide under the slogan ‘Put water in the groove.’

Through an MoU between the Nicosia Municipality and Nicosia Water Board, Smart Nicosia will provide its expertise and infrastructure for the installation of meters. The initiative begins with a 3,000 meter pilot in the walled city, aiming to reduce water losses due to leaks and improve water resource management in the city.

The Mayor of Nicosia, Constantinos Yiorkadjis, emphasized the importance of proper water management in a region where water scarcity is a constant issue. The project will utilize Smart Nicosia’s platform and networks such as LoRa and NB-IoT, with Diehl Metering’s Hydrus ultrasonic meters being installed.

This project is part of Cyprus’s ‘Thaleia 2021-2027’ cohesion policy program, co-financed by the EU. The Smart Nicosia smart city initiative encompasses various infrastructures, including fiber and wi-fi networks, smart parking systems, environmental sensors, and a smart city command center, aiming for a more sustainable and efficient urban environment.
