InterConnect offers compatible solutions for connecting homes and buildings to the grid

1. InterConnect project closed after 54 months with €36 million funding from Horizon 2020 to deliver solutions for interoperability in energy management.

2. Led by INESC TEC with 50 partners, the project focused on connecting devices and systems for efficient energy management through seven large-scale pilots in seven European countries.

3. Outcomes of the project include a Distribution System Operator Interface, an Interoperable Recommender, and three energy apps like Wattch.r and Continente Plug&Charge for consumer use.

The InterConnect project, funded with €36 million over 54 months, aimed to deliver interoperability solutions for devices, systems, and users to interact with the grid efficiently. Led by INESC TEC in Portugal with 50 partners, the project included large-scale pilots in seven European countries.

Using interoperability as its foundation, the project focused on integrating different technologies to support energy and non-energy services, connecting buildings and grids. This project is part of the ongoing digitalization of the energy system, allowing consumers in the EU to access new features for optimized energy management.

The development of a semantic interoperability framework based on the SAREF model enabled the testing of interoperability in integrating technologies and solutions from different manufacturers in residential and commercial settings. Outcomes of the project include a distribution system operator interface and a recommendation system for European consumers to manage energy use in buildings.

The Interoperable Recommender emerged as a response to the energy crisis in Europe, providing a consumer-centered solution to support the efficiency and resilience of the EU power grid. Additionally, three energy apps, including Wattch.r from Portugal, Continente Plug&Charge, Flexi from Italy, and InterConnectGR from Greece, were developed to help consumers reduce their carbon footprint and manage electricity consumption.
