KenGen approves implementation of GreenFire’s GreenLoop technology

– GreenFire Energy Inc. approved by KenGen to implement GreenLoop technology in a geothermal well in Kenya
– KenGen aims to accelerate geothermal energy generation in Kenya, focusing on new technologies for electricity generation
– GreenFire Energy’s GreenLoop technology enables retrofitting of idle wells and expansion of geothermal fields, aligning with KenGen’s vision for sustainable energy

GreenFire Energy Inc. has received approval from Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) to begin implementing its GreenLoop® technology in a geothermal well in the Olkaria Geothermal field in Kenya. This project aims to generate electricity from a well that is not currently producing steam, with the goal of eventually applying GreenLoop technology across KenGen’s geothermal resources.

KenGen is a top 10 global geothermal energy producer, with plans to expand its renewables by 3000 MW over the next decade, primarily through geothermal energy sources in the Rift Valley region of Kenya. The company generates 799 MW from geothermal, accounting for 85% of the country’s geothermal capacity. By 2030, KenGen aims to fulfill over 50% of its electricity needs from geothermal sources.

GreenFire Energy’s GreenLoop technology is a closed-loop advanced geothermal system that can access geothermal resources traditional methods cannot. This technology allows for the retrofitting of idle wells to increase power production economically, as well as de-risking new wells and expanding existing fields. The collaboration between KenGen and GreenFire Energy is expected to accelerate geothermal energy generation in Kenya and beyond.

Both KenGen and GreenFire Energy are optimistic about the partnership, with KenGen’s Managing Director expressing enthusiasm for the potential of the GreenLoop technology to enhance the country’s energy landscape. GreenFire Energy’s President highlighted the tailored solutions that GreenLoop can provide to maximize production from KenGen’s geothermal resources. This collaboration reflects both companies’ commitment to achieving Kenya’s clean energy goals through innovative technology.
