Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE) has completed construction and started operating its Horizon Solar Project in Frio County, Texas. The 200-MW project will supply Verizon with renewable energy under a previous agreement. It is estimated to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to powering 1.2 million Texan households, while also providing $30 million in tax payments to support the local community and schools. The project created around 400 jobs during construction.
LRE’s senior VP of development, Omar Aboudaher, expressed gratitude to the supportive community in Frio County for making the project possible. The company’s sustainable practices at Horizon Solar include sheep grazing for vegetation control, a biodiversity management plan, and planting pollinator-friendly native plant species. These efforts not only increase land productivity but also provide supplementary income to farmers and contribute to the transition to clean energy.
LRE’s approach considers environmental, social, and cultural factors throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring a positive impact on the community and the environment. With the successful completion of Horizon Solar, LRE continues to deliver renewable energy solutions to its customers while supporting local economies and environmental conservation.
