LONGi’s latest bifacial module features enhanced durability with thicker glass to improve resistance against hail damage

LONGi has launched a new solar panel, the Hi-MO 5 Ice-Shield module, designed for durability and reliability in hail and windstorms. Unlike traditional modules, the Ice-Shield module uses toughened safety glass technology with a 3.2-mm integrated top layer of tempered glass to withstand up to 55-mm hailstones. Additionally, it can withstand up to approximately 17-times the impact energy of traditional modules. Third-party testing showed no visual defects or power degradation after impact from a 55-mm hailstone.

Grace Sun, Head of Marketing and Communication Group at LONGi North America, highlighted the need for innovation to protect critical infrastructure against extreme weather patterns caused by the climate crisis. The Ice-Shield module, specifically designed to protect grid stability and asset value, offers a 12-year product and 30-year power warranty.

The Ice-Shield module is reinforced with 6005-T6 high-strength anodized aluminum alloy material, providing a yield strength of up to 3,600-Pa wind loads, equivalent to 171.33 mph winds. With its frame as the main load-bearing component, the module can withstand hailstorms often accompanied by winds exceeding 120 mph. Additionally, the new module offers a 2.2% power generation increase and 0.9% BOS cost reduction compared to other bifacial transparent backsheet modules.
