– Norway leading in transition to electric passenger cars
– Enova funding charging infrastructure for electric trucks in Norway
– Testing of electric trucks for snow plowing in Norway, showcasing viability of electric vehicles
Norway is leading the transition to electric vehicles, with over 92% of new passenger car sales being battery electric or plug-in hybrids. However, only 2% of trucks in the country are electric. To address this, Norway has set a target for all new trucks to be electric by 2030. Enova is providing funding to five companies to install charging infrastructure for electric trucks along key transportation routes.
Litra, a freight hauling company in Scandinavia, has purchased two electric trucks for snow plowing. These trucks have 1000 kWh batteries and have been tested by the Norwegian Road Administration for plowing roads in challenging conditions. Charging remains a challenge for electric trucks, with the need for more high-power chargers and faster charging speeds.
The US is also beginning to plan for high power chargers for electric trucks, following in the footsteps of Norway. While fossil fuel interests try to discredit electric vehicles, commercial operators recognize the efficiency and cost-saving benefits of electric trucks. The increase in electric trucks in fleets is positive for lowering emissions in the transportation sector.
