The Akkuyu nuclear power plant (NPP) in Turkey, built by Russian state nuclear company Rosatom, is expected to meet 10% of the country’s electricity needs. The commissioning stage of the first unit at Akkuyu NPP has begun, with Rosatom director-general Alexey Likhachev stating that work is progressing as planned. The construction includes four Russia-designed water-water energetic reactors (VVERs), with the first unit scheduled to become operational next year. Rosatom aims to have all four units operational by the end of 2028.
Rosatom considers the Akkuyu project crucial for its global influence in nuclear power development, fostering cooperation with countries worldwide. Following the completion of Akkuyu NPP, Turkey plans to construct two more nuclear power plants at Sinop and Thrace. According to the World Nuclear Industry Annual Report for 2023, Rosatom is the leading constructor and exporter of reactors globally, having built 24 out of the 58 reactors constructed worldwide as of mid-2023. This emphasizes the company’s significant role in advancing nuclear energy technology internationally.
