BW Ideol and Holcim have signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct a feasibility study on supplying low-carbon concrete for the floating offshore wind industry in Scotland. The collaboration will focus on optimizing the supply of concrete needed for mass production of BW Ideol’s floaters in the Port of Ardersier. Low-carbon concrete is seen as advantageous for offshore wind farms due to its durability in marine environments, local availability, and lower carbon emissions.
Holcim will work on developing specific durable maritime low-carbon concrete mixes with enhanced mechanical performance suited for slipform application. The company will leverage its ECOPact portfolio of low-carbon solutions for sustainable construction and utilize research and products developed at its global Innovation Center in France. Efforts will be made to optimize and develop the local supply chain through subsidiaries like Aggregate Industries, one of the leading UK suppliers of construction materials.
BW Ideol’s CEO, Paul de la Guérivière, views this agreement as a step towards industrializing floating foundations and enhancing capacity for serial production lines. The collaboration aims to improve local content and reduce carbon footprint for the benefit of partners and the floating wind industry. This initiative underscores the commitment to sustainable solutions in the renewable energy sector.
