Globeleq has been awarded preferred bidder status for its 153 MW/612 MWh Red Sands project in the Northern Cape, South Africa, under the Energy Storage Capacity Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. This project will be the largest standalone battery energy storage system in Africa and is being developed in collaboration with African Green Ventures.
Located about 100 km southeast of Upington, the Red Sands project will cover approximately 5 hectares and connect to the grid through the Eskom Garona substation. The project, with an estimated cost of US$300 million, is expected to take 24 months to construct after financial close, which is anticipated later this year. Globeleq’s CEO, Mike Scholey, sees this as a significant step towards meeting South Africa’s and Africa’s increasing demand for energy by leveraging battery storage technology.
Globeleq already owns and operates renewable energy plants in South Africa and Mozambique, and is working on developing more battery energy storage projects across the African continent. The company aims to contribute to meeting the continent’s growing demand for energy by utilizing advancements in battery storage technology. This project marks an important milestone for Globeleq in the field of large-scale battery energy storage solutions in Africa.
