2. Repsol secures a long-term PPA for 89% of the solar plant’s output, ensuring stable returns.
3. Repsol aims to have 9-10GW of renewable capacity by 2027, with 30% located in the US.
Spanish oil and gas company Repsol has recently completed the Frye Solar project in Swisher County, Texas, marking its largest solar plant in the US with an installed capacity of 637MW. The facility near Kress utilizes one million solar panels and has secured a long-term power purchase agreement for 89% of its output. This achievement aligns with Repsol’s commitment to becoming a net-zero emissions company by 2050, with significant growth ambitions in renewable energy in the US.
Repsol’s renewable energy portfolio in Texas has now exceeded 2GW, including the Outpost and Pinnington plants with 629MW and 825MW, respectively. The company also operates the Jicarilla 1 and 2 solar power plants in New Mexico, totaling 125MW with 20MW of battery storage. With plans to invest between €3bn and €4bn to expand its global project portfolio, Repsol aims to reach 9-10GW of installed capacity by 2027, with a focus on the US market.
Repsol’s entry into the US renewable market began with the acquisition of a stake in Hecate Energy in 2021, followed by the purchase of ConnectGen from Quantum Capital Group in September 2023. The latter deal added 20GW of onshore wind, solar, and energy storage projects to Repsol’s development pipeline, accelerating its progress towards achieving 20GW of renewable capacity by the end of the 2020s.
